Alaska - 阿拉斯加 : All photos were taken during my two weeks phtoto trip in the early June 2009. We have planned the trip in very details months before the travel. We arrived in Anchorage Airport, rented a car and stayed one night in the city; then began two weeks journey. Anchorage - Seward - Kenai Fjords NP - Homer - Whittier - Denali NP - Mut-Su - Valdez. Everything is done as planned. Alaska is beautiful and so green in June. I like the mountains appearing directly raised from sea levels. The fog in the morning and late evening. The sunshine at 4:00 am and 11:00 pm. Those are just some examples for my most impressed Alaska. The weather in June is unpredictable. We stayed in Denali National Park for three days. The Denali was never ready to appear. The roads are very limited in term of approaching the photographing site in Alaska. Arizona, South - 亚利桑那, 沙漠,风景 : I had planned a two weeks photo trip to Arizona. The main goals is to photograph Red Rock Country, Sonoran Desert and Sky Islands regions. The time was chosen the last two weeks of Match. I flew to Phoenix at Match 16, 2009, pick up a small SUV and started my two weeks journey: Sedona - Grant Canyon - Petrified Forest NP - Globe - Wilcox - Tucson - Ajo - Phoenix. California, Alabama Hills, Mount Whitney, 加利福尼亚, 惠特尼峰 : Alabama Hills was the last stop of this trip. The plan was to stay for one morning and one evening. I had slightly changed my plan in Death Valley due to cancellation of trip to Eureka Dunes and Racetrack. I decided to give up one morning in Death Valley and add one to Alabama Hills. I got up early at 3:30 next day, drove 90 miles and arrived Alabama Hills before the dawn. I was waiting for the sunrise. Unfortunately, it was cloudy that morning. It did not disapoint me. I was stunned by Mount Whitney. I felt like that Mount Whitney was just rising from the valley where I stood. It was so close in front my camera. I arrived the next morning before the dawn. I started with iso 400, F8.0 and 30 seconds and finished at 8:15 AM. Then, I drove 300 miles to San Diego Airport to complete my trip.

California, Joshua Tree National Park - 加利福尼亚, 约束亚树国家公园 : I attended a proffessional conference In San Diego, California in the end of January 2012. I had a short one week trip to the National Parks nearby in southern California, including Joshua Tree, Death Valley and Alabama Hills as well. I jst saw some photos of Alabama Hills recently. It is a stunning and photogenic location. I heard local weather in San Diego that it would be rain. I had to change my schedule and arrived in Joshua Tree National Park before the sunrise and rain; and caught a spectacular dawn sky (the first picture in this fold is a example of photo taken that morning).

California, Northern-Central coastline - 加利福尼亚 红杉树国家公园，2010 : I planned a week photo trip to Northern California Coastline including Redwood National Park at the end of November 2010 before a conference in San Francisco. However, I had only two day good weather. I have to change my plan to go south to the Central Coastline at Big Sur region for my las two days. Original plan also included one day shoots in Bay Area. California, Death Valley National Park, 加利福尼亚, 死亡谷国家公园 2012 : I attended a proffessional conference In San Diego, California in the end of January 2012. I had a short one week trip to the National Parks nearby in southern California, including Joshua Tree, Death Valley and Alabama Hills as well. I jst saw some photos of Alabama Hills recently. It is a stunning and photogenic location. The primary photogapgy sites of this trip are Death Valley. One thing which has been in my mind for a long time is Sand Dunes. I have pre reserved a small SUV in San Diego Airport two months before the trip and planned to drive to Eureka Dunes and Racetrack. When I arrived the car rental, a serviceman brought a full size SUV Ford Expedition and said "free upgraded", which means no other SUV available. I was stunned with its size and thought "it looks like a tank". I decided not to take the full size SUV and picked up a regular car. The plan to Eureka Dunes and Racetrack has been given up at this point.

Canada, Quebec, Fall Colors, 加拿大，魁北克，秋色 : It was some dispointment in 2011 fall season for foilage. The quality of the leave colors in Southern and Central Vermont of 2011 was far below an average year(you may review those photos in the fold - Vermont foliage-Fall Colors 2011). In 2012, we planned to go further north at the same time as 2011(at the weekend of Columbus Day or Thanksgiving in Canada). The plan was to catch the best fall colors in southern Quebec of Canada and northern Vermont. Our trip is the same as planned. Mont Tremblant - La Mauricie National Park - Quebec City - Newport VT - total 10 days. This fall, the timing is near perfect and the quanlity of the leave colors is very good to excellent. However, the weather was so bad. It was rainy except of one day when we were at La Mauricie and one morning in Quebec City.

Canadian Rockies, Canada, Kananaskis Country - 加拿大, 洛矶山脉 : I began to prepare my next trip to Canadian Rockies after I came back from Alaska in July 2009. The plan was to visit Banff, Jasper and other National Parks in Canadian Rockies. The time, I had primarily thought about, was at the beginning of October 2010. After two months reading about the areas, I decided to add another major destination for photographing: Kananaskis Country. The project was further expanded to include Waterton National Park and US Glacier National Park in next a few months. The plan appeared too ambitious as comparing to original one. I felt that more time was nended for preparation. I cancelled the plan and made a casual trip to Chongqing, CHINA in the the end of October 2010. The photos of China visit can bee seen in Fold CHINA, Chongqing of this website. The final plan was decided to visit Canadian Rockies in late Spring of 2011. Seattle WA - Yoho NP - Jasper NP - Banff NP - Kananaski Country - Waterton NP - Glacier NP (US) - North Cascades NP - Seattle. My journey was just like plan. Everything appeared fine until my last stop when I drove from Spokane to North Cascades. The geologic patterns of the areas reminded me of Palouse Region. I just realized that I drove through north edge of Palouse! I will definitely choose to stay two night in Palouse instead of actually stayed in North Cascades if I had done better on my homework for the preparation. The weather was collaborative during staying in Kananaskis Country. I drove through Smith-Dorrinetrail in the evening and Kananaskis Trail (Hyw 40) next morning to visit provincial parks along the roads.

Canadian Rockies, Banff National Park - 加拿大, 班夫国家公园 : I began to prepare my next trip to Canadian Rockies after I came back from Alaska in July 2009. The plan was to visit Banff, Jasper and other National Parks in Canadian Rockies. The time, I had primarily thought about, was at the beginning of October 2010. After two months reading about the areas, I decided to add another major destination for photographing: Kananaskis Country. The project was further expanded to include Waterton National Park and US Glacier National Park in next a few months. The plan appeared too ambitious as comparing to original one. I felt that more time was nended for preparation. I cancelled the plan and made a casual trip to Chongqing, CHINA in the the end of October 2010. The day in Yoho was rainy and the weather becam better when arriving in Jasper. The road to Mount Edith/Tonquin Valley was still closed.

Canadian Rockies, Waterton National Park - 加拿大, 洛矶山脉, 沃特顿国家公园 : I began to prepare my next trip to Canadian Rockies after I came back from Alaska in July 2009. After Kananasky Country, I drove south through Canada Hwy 22 (Cow Boy Trail) to the US/Canada border and Waterton National Park. I was really surprised to see dramatic geographic transition from mountain range to huge flat grassland, then again mountain range with even higher atitude. The weather became much better.

Colorado Rocky - 科罗拉多 洛矶山 : The photos were taken during two weeks travel in Colorado Rocky Mountains between September 20 and October 3, 2008. The project was to catch the foliage of the Rocky in fall. It was an almost perfect trip, including weather as planned. The fall colors is generally unpredictable if defining the best a few days. I feel I was lucky. I did see some most beautiful colors in the regions. It made this trip more special. Everything went as arranged or planned by several months before. We trevaled from Rocky Mountains National Park - Aspen - Crested Butt - Black Canyon National Park - Ouray - Mesa Verde National Park - Telluride - Colorado National Monument. Yosemite Winter 2009 - 加利福尼亚 优胜美地国家公园 冬 2009 : I had a conference in San Jose in February 2009. I pick up a car in the airport and drove to Yosemite National Park after the meeting. I had three days to stay. I needed fresh snow during the period of time. There was no accumulated snow in first two days. The park was not so impressive. There was a 7 inch snow during the second night. The snow stopped next morning, It was a beautiful days. Most roads were closed, including Glacier Point Road. Only road available is the road to Yosemite Valley. Maine, Acadia National Park - 缅因, 阿卡迪亚国家公园 : We had two weeks vacation with ZaiZai (dog) and MauMau (cat) in the Northeast of the States in the end of September and the beginning of October, 2007. It was our last vacation with ZaiZai. She (German Shepherd Mix) had strong will to go out although she had been in the wheelchair for more than one year. I planned to catch the best fall colors in New England and Acadia National Park. We had a few days in the Mountains of New Hempshire. Then, We rented a vacation house for one week in the town of Southwest Habor in the island where Acadia National Park locates. However, I did not realize that the fall season is slightly delayed on the coastline as comparing to inland mountain regions until I arrived in Acadia Nation Park.

Michigan-Upper Peninsula/Ohio Fall Colors 2009 - 密歇根 北部半岛 秋色 2009 : Upper Penninsula of Michigan is considered amongst three or four best locations for fall colors photography in North American. As comparing to other hot destinations for foliage, the penninsula has more water space and much low in population. I went to Dearborn, MI for a meeting in the beginning of October 2009. After the conference, I drove north and spent 1 week in Upper Peninsula of Michigan to see the fall colors in this part of the country: Traverse City - Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore - Porcupine Moutains - Para Marquette State Forest - Cuyahoga National Park, OH. I entered US border at Glacier National Park after I comleted my travel in Canada. The weather in Glacier National Park was excellent and even suprised me was that the lady at the gate for fee collection told me: it was free entry day when I arrived on June 21, 2011. However, I was also told that the majority of Going to the Sun Road was still closed due to unusual large snow in the winter 2010-2011, including some best parts of the park: Logan Pass, Garden Wall, the Loop, Avalanche Creek. I had no choice to stay in eastern part of the Glacier and spent most of time in Many Glacier

Rhode Island- Lighthouse - 罗德岛, 灯塔 : I had a three days business trip in Rhode Island in October, 2010. It was found that Point Judith Lighthouse is 8 miles from my destination. I had one evening and one morning available to shoot the lighthouse. I had never been in this area before. However, I did review some online photos of Point Judith Lighthouse and had general ideas about the directions of sunrise and sunset. I had my evening shoot first and decided to try one more time next morning before going to the airport. I started shoot at 05:30 and finished at 06:15. Texas, Big Bend National Park, 德克萨斯, 大弯曲国家公园 : Big Bend National Park is located so remote that I have been looking for an opportunity to visit for a few years. I had a short stay in Dallas, TX in August 2011. The weather is very hot in the summer and is not considered a good time to visit the southwest part of Texas. I traveled to Dallas again in the middle of May in 2012. I decided this time to visit Big Bend National Park and Southwestern Texas although Match and April are believed better months in the region. I began to read about the regions of southwestern Texas and collect information for the treval. The final plan was to focus on three locations: Big Bend National Park El Camino Del Rio (the River Road) through Big Bend Ranch State Park Ghost Town, Terlingua The weather condition was not so bad as I expected except of temperature during the day. There were a few major thunderstroms just before I arrived and during my stays. The desert plants were in very good condition due to recent precipitation. I also experimented my first night sky photography: Mliky Way over ruins in the Ghost Town, Terlingua.

Texas, Ghost Town, Terlinghua and El Camino del Rio，德克萨斯, 鬼城 : After making decision to go to Southwestern Texas in May 2012, I began to collect information, review related websites and study photographs around areas. One day, I read an article online about photographing Milky Way at Big Bend National Park. It said that this area is one of best areas in the US to photograph Milky Way due to darkness during the night. It also said that the best night to take the action is during the new moon. I immidiately checked to find out the night with new moon in May 2012: It was May 20. On this day and plus/minus two days (between May 17 and 22), I would be there as previous planned. 天赐良机！ I got up at two O'clock and arrived the location prevous investigated in the morning May 20, 2012. I began to shoot at around 2:30 AM till 6:00 AM. I continued to shoot in the area for the ruins until 8:00 AM to complete the project.

Tennessee, Great Smoky Mountains 2007- 美国，田纳西， 大烟雾山国家公园，2007 : In the end of April and beginning of May, 2007, we had two weeks travel and vacation in Shenandoah National Park and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Plan was to drive through and photograph Skyline Drive of Shenandoah National Park and Blue Ridge Parkway to Great Smoky Mountains. We completed Skyline Drive and on the halfway of Blue Ridge Parkway. We had to give up Blue Ridge Parkway due to the weather. We stayed in a rental cottage for a week in Gatlinburg. Utah-Canyonlands - 犹他, 国家公园 : This is my first photo trip to Southwest in the early sring of 2008. I have been these regions many times before. There was no serious photos taken in previous visitings. However, the idea to back to the region to take photograpgy has been long time in my head. There are other things more important than photography. The goal of this trip is to visit the Canyon Country in the Southwest region of the States, specifically, the southern Utah and northern Arizona areas of the four corners. There was total 14 days treval: Capitol Reef National Park - Moab (Arches and Conyonlands National Parks) - Monument Valley Navajo - Page (Lake Powell and Antelope Canyon) - Zion National Park - Bryce National Park. Vermont foliage-Fall Colors 2011 - 佛蒙特, 秋色，2011 : This fold shows fall colors of Vermonte in 2011 and 2012 trips. I had 3 days in central (Stowe) and southern (Manchester) Vermonte in 2011 for fall colors during Columbus Day weekend. I had two projects to experiment in this trip: - Fall colors with HDR photography. Hypothesis is that all colors expression is dependent on the light. HDR photography can boost the light expression , especially in the dark area. Theoretically, HDR photography will improve the color expression. - Fall colors with tele-zoom (400 mm). In general, the tele-zooms are not the best for the colors and wide angles have advantages due to general background noise in tele-zooms caused by the distance to object. The weather was excellent in 2011 and however, the color changes at the time were just moderate, especially in south part of Vermonte. I made second trip in 2012 and went further north to southern Quebec and north/central Vermonte (Newport and Stowe) at the same time as 2011. Unfortunately, it was rainy in 2012 trip during all my staying in Vermonte.

Washington, North Cascade National Park - 华盛顿州, 北瀑布国家公园 : North Cascade National Park was the last stop of my Canadian Rocky/Glacier National Park photography trip in June/July 2010. The weather was not very impressed as expected. I had no other choice to stay in lower part of the national and took some pictures tn the rain forest. I even gave up my last morming for photo, directly drove to Seattle and completed my Journey.

Panorama, Landscape - 全景摄影 : All images in the fold were made by merging multiple photgraphies to form the panorama pictures, usually betweem 3 to 10 exposures. Unlike some technical suggestions, I usaully take the individual photos jusk like any rouline photoshoots, by using automatic or fixed focus/exposure with RAW formate. However, I do sometime try to focus on the area with similar texture and lightness in these serial photos. In the photomerging processes, I do not use raw RAW files to form merged panorama images. The RAW file will be modified first with photoshope CS4. I will adjust White Balance with identical Temperature and Tint and pay especially attention on the HISTOGRAMS in each individual RAW file and adjust them to similar EXPOSURE lightness. Second goal for modified RAW files is to remove the dusts in the sky and water. The panorama picture will then be merged using the modified RAW files.

Black-White, US/Canada National Parks - 黑白摄影，美国/加拿大，国家公园 : I like Black-White photos. It is abstract of the color world. There are different ways to make Black-White photos. All my Black-White photos are converted from the color files. I feel that more saturated the color file is easier to manipulate during the Black-White convert. A good black-white convert sometime needs many tries and great imagination even today with so sophisticated Photoshop PS. Can you imagine darkroom “manipulating” a masterpiece of black-white print a half century ago?
